Remove the pump. Pop the snap retainers with a screwdriver and pull the pump off the motor shaft. Then disconnect the electrical connectors from the motor. Replace the broken coupler. Pop the bottom retainer off the motor and prop up the motor while you pop the top retainer its heavy. Pry the broken coupler pieces off the motor and transmission. Tap the new coupler into place with a wooden block. If you own a Whirlpool direct drive washer the water hoses attach to the left side when viewed from the back, youve probably got a broken couplera common failure caused by overloading the machine. Its an easy and inexpensive fix, about 2. Fix 2 Draining problems. Replace the pump. Tip the machine back and support it with blocks. Remove the pump belt and the three pump retaining screws. Tilt the pump forward and lift it out of the opening. When clothing or jewelry gets stuck in the hose to the pump or in the pump itself, the machine wont drain and you might hear squealing or grinding or smell burning rubber. First remove the hose that goes from the tub to the pump drain the water into a bowl and check for stuck socks yes, thats where they go. Then run a coat hanger through the tube and pull out the stuck objects. Next check the pump for broken blades by shaking it. Rotate the pump shaft to make sure it spins freely. Replace the pump if you find any damage 5. Maytag 4. 4 for Whirlpool. If you see any burned or melted sections on the belts, replace them 3. Maytag belts are specially designed, so dont substitute an ordinary V belt. Fix 3 Slow fill or no fill. Replace the water valve. Remove the water valve bracket and mount the new valve. Transfer the electrical connectors to the HotCold portions of the new valve. Then transfer the fill hose by compressing the spring clamp. If your washing machine fills slowly or wont fill at all, try cleaning the inlet screens on the water valve. To see how, type inlet screen in the search box above. If that doesnt help, replace the entire water valve assembly 3. Fix 4 Wont agitate or spin. Replace the lid switch. Remove the lid switch on a Maytag type washer by prying up the locking tab and sliding the switch forward. To install the new switch, just set it in the slot and pull it backward. If the machine fills with water and then just sits there, suspect a broken lid switch. To test the switch, youll need a continuity tester about 8 or a multimeter about 1. If you dont know how to use a multimeter, type multimeter in the search box above. Remove the wires connected to the switch and touch the testers probes to the switchs connectors. As you open and close the lid, readings should alternate between continuity and no continuity. If not, replace the switch 3. To replace the switch on a Whirlpool type washer Figure A, just remove the two screws and screw in the new one. To get at the switch on a Maytag type washer Figure B, youll have to unscrew the access panel behind the console and replace the switch as shown here. Remember to raise the lid before you remove the old switch. Tip Never drop a washing machines lid Slamming the lid eventually wrecks the lid switch. Additional Information. Im not a fan of writing a business plan and believe its only necessary if you are trying to get outside funding. However, forming a strategy and doing some planning are crucial to business success. Step 1  Are you cut out for this business The success of your home repair business isnt going to be determined by how smart you are or how well you planned your attack from the beginning, the long term success of your business will be determined by your motivation. If you dont enjoy what you are doing, the motivation will slowing wither away and so will the profits. Another thing to consider is whether or not you are a self starter or need direction in order to be effective. There are a lot of decisions you will need to make everyday and even the small decisions count. Possessing the ability to make these decisions reasonably fast and move to the next thing is paramount. Step 2  What services are you going to offer Start by listing your handy skills and then try to figure out which services you would enjoy doing. The second thing to consider, something that most people forget about,  is which audience you want to work with. Liking the type of people you deal with will make business much more enjoyable. Now that youve chosen your target market, getting to know them will help you reach them with advertisements. Try to learn how they shop and where they go when they need a home repair. Now that you know what home repair services you will provide and who you will provide them to, its time to get everything in order so can start raking in the cash. You may choose to postpone some of theses steps and complete them as you go, but keep in mind that it gets more difficult to focus on these items while balancing a customer schedule. Here is a list of some of the tasks you should complete for the initial setup. Choose a name for your home repair business. Choose a business structure for your handyman business. Open a business bank account. Have a logo designed. It helps you look professional and helps your customers remember you. Get some business cards and begin handing them out right away. Set up a business address separate from your home address. Get some liability insurance if necessary. When I started my handyman business, the first thing I did was tell my friends and family what I was doing. This allowed me the opportunity to start getting business right away and helped fund some of the items on the above list. Its not likely that you will be overwhelmed with business from telling friends and family, but it may just provide that extra bit of money and motivation you need to move forward. Step 5  Market Your Services. This is where you will spend the majority of your time during the first couple of months in business. Just because you set up this awesome, well branded business, doesnt mean the calls are going to immediately start pouring in. People dont know you exist  and its time to let them know. Depending on who your target market is, youre marketing strategy and the marketing methods you employ will be different from the next guy. Im assuming you have a limited budget so you wont be able to try everything at once.
